Language Specific Quoting and Quotation Marks

This page shows how language specific quotation marks are set with CSS and the unicode characters for the typographical quotes used in several languages. The browser should replace the Q-Tags for cites in HTML normally by the quotes used in the language a page is written in, if no language for a quote is given. But most browsers seem to know only one style for quotation marks.

Using CSS allows to have quotation marks which are typographically correct even if the correct marks are not part of the character set, the page is written in (eg latin1).

The CSS here work well for most of the browsers knowing about CSS. Other browsers should render quotes with current quotation marks from HTML code.

Known issues: Neither text browser Links nor IE can render Quotes correctly. So you will see no quotation marks in this page with these browsers.

Note: This page is in work and there may be errors. Especially typesetters, who normally know, which quotation marks are used in printed media, are encouraged to report errors and the correct quotation marks selected from my quotation mark table to jw-dict (at) witch.westfalen.de.

If you want to include css for your own pages, you may look into the source code of this page, to find the css. To include the css in your own pages, follow these steps:

Some sources for more information:

You may not always rely on these sources. To ensure, if the quotation marks are correct, other sources like equivalents to German Duden may be used if they contain information about typesetting and not only handwriting and writing with a typewriter or computer.

If more than one alternative is listed, the first one can be the preferred one for book printing, but you cannot rely on that.
